Thousands of homes and businesses in Ashton were plunged into darkness after reckless youths played with power cables.
Pubs, shops and businesses in Ashton town centre were forced to evacuate when they lost their power at just before 6.30pm on Thursday.
The power cut also caused chaos on the roads as traffic lights stopped working.
Around 1,300 homes and businesses were affected.

United Utilities confirmed the loss of power was caused by a group of youths who had been climbing trees and throwing bike chains at the power cables in Allscott Way, Ashton.

A company spokesman said: "The youths had been climbing trees and threw a bike chain over the overhead leads.
"They were using the bike chain to pull the cables together, so when the conductor came into contact with the metal, it caused a spark to happen.

"As a result, they caused power to go off in the area.
"It was restored within 35 minutes.
"This sort of reckless behaviour inconveniences customers and puts themselves at risk.

"We would urge them to think of the consequences – they need to think about what they are doing as they might not be so lucky next time. They could cause themselves serious injury – or even worse.
"We have to look at ways to deter people from doing things like this in the future.

"If people see this sort of action they should give us a call on 0800 195 4141 and let us know what is happening."

'... The power cut also caused chaos on the roads as traffic lights stopped working. ...'

Believe it or not, the traffic through Ashton town centre flows better without the traffic lights.

Dicks. So if they know who the culprits are what's happened to them? - a slap on the wrist, telling off, deduct pocket money

The problem with going in to all this detail is they are risking copy cat attacks from idiots who have nothing better to do.

I agree with Chrissy. Why make them famous? (although not named, they'll be telling their mates and anyone who will listen). They'll dine on this for months. Should have been swept under the carpet - "a power fault occurred, and was fixed promptly". Now someone else will have a go at it. Just to be awkward. No skin off a teenagers nose, is it?
